Raleigh, NC – Winter may have put a hold on school events around the Triangle this week, but it will not put a stop to the upcoming busy Tech Weekend. So shake off the winter ice and come out to the events.

The 2 major events are going on just a few buildings away from each other on the NCSU Centennial Campus:

7 – Free and Open Source Software Fair! Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) Fair is an annual “unconference” where NC State students, faculty, staff, alumni, and affiliates can present on and talk about anything and everything related to Free and Open Source Software. Saturday, February 7, 2015 from 8:30 AM – 5:30 PM (EST) in Raleigh, NC.

9-10 – 30TH Annual Emerging Issues Forum. The 30th Annual Emerging Issues Forum will explore how innovators in all sectors are thriving. They flourish by leveraging new connections in order to locate leading-edge ideas, to adapt to an increasingly mobile workforce and to access shifting sources of capital.

17 – WRAL TechWire Executive Exchange: Crowdfunding in 2015. Many entrepreneurs and investors are hopeful that 2015 is the year in which crowdfunding legislation becomes law in North Carolina. WRAL TechWire’s next Executive Exchange event will focus on that topic, and headlining the program is North Carolina’s Department of Commerce Secretary who also wants crowdfunding enacted.

20-22 – Triangle Startup Weekend: Education – All startups created this weekend will be focused on education!

20 – ODI NC Training Class: Open Data Fundamentals. Get trained in Open Data in preparation for Triangle Open Data Day!

21-22 – Triangle Open Data Day 2015. Triangle Open Data Day 2015 is a gathering of citizens in the Triangle to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments.

25-26 – High Five Conference – Where Marketing & Creative Meet, Raleigh, NC. If you consider yourself a marketer, and by that we mean strategist, communicator, designer, creative director, product manager, developer, writer, and everyone in between or on the periphery, this conference is for you. Analytics, customer experience, data-driven, digital marketing – fits our tech theme!

27 – Charlotte Startup Weekend. Charlotte Startup Weekend 2015 will be held Friday, February 27, 2015 at 7:00 PM – Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 9:30 PM (EST) in Charlotte, NC. Startup Weekends are 54-hour events designed to provide superior experiential education for technical and non-technical entrepreneurs.

Raleigh, NC – So we attended the Google Fiber party in Raleigh at Clouds Brewing. A great party and Clouds Brewing did a really good job making sure that everyone was well fed and agreeably drunk!(?) A great party!

6 – Code for Durham. Code for Durham starts their 2015 meetings with their first meeting on Tuesday, January 6, 2015. Code for Durham meets at the American Underground @Main facility on a biweekly basis. All meetings can be found on the Triangle Code for America Meetup Group.

6 – Code for Raleigh. Code for Raleigh starts their 2015 meetings with their first meeting on Tuesday, January 6, 2015. Code for Raleigh meets at the NC Innovation Center on the 1st Tuesday of the month. All meetings can be found on the Triangle Code for America Meetup Group.

8 – Morrisville Startup Networking. This month, Morrisville Start Up will be at a special location, The Hardware Store by Bi-Link. Come check out this state-of-the-art facility for engineers.

12 – American Tobacco Documentary. Private screening of Because No One Else Would and Q&A with the filmmaker.

12 – Exit Event. Be one of the first in the Triangle to toast a beer or glass of wine at RTP’s new Frontier open innovation center for entrepreneurs and creatives.

13 – Code for Cary. Code for Cary starts their 2015 meetings with their first meeting on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Code for Cary is meeting at a new location in 2015 the Cary Innovation Center on a biweekly basis. All meetings can be found on the Triangle Code for America Meetup Group.

14 – Bull City Venture Partners Entrepreneurs’ Series. Venture Outlook: Come hear and meet the angel investors & venture capitalists that have funded some of the region’s most promising technology startups. They will talk about trends and where they are looking to invest in 2015.

15 – RTP Launching the Frontier. Come celebrate the launch of The Frontier with RTP team!

22 – Data Innovation Day. The third annual Data Innovation Day will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2015. No activities are planned for the Triangle.

28 – Data Privacy Day. Data Privacy Day is an international effort to empower and educate people to protect their privacy and control their digital footprint. Data Privacy Day will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. No activities are planned for the Triangle.

February 2015 Events

All Things Open 2014

Raleigh, NC – The world’s top developers, technologists and decision makers will gather on October 22-23 in Raleigh, NC for the second annual All Things Open conference, presented by IT-oLogy and OpenSource.com. Two days of keynotes, talks, tutorials and networking opportunities will be presented on the most important topics in open source, open tech, and the open web in the enterprise. Top 3 Teams Selected for NC Datapalooza

Raleigh, NC –  NC Datapalooza has announced the Top 3 teams making it into their 30-day accelerator. This year, NC Datapalooza is focusing on innovation through open data in the health vertical.

Top 3 Teams

Here are the teams along with a short description of their business idea.

  • LocalMedAdvisor: Our goal is to change the way patients select physicians and healthcare facilities, using Medicare billing data, insurance plan trends, customer reviews, and other data sources.
  • FreeWheeling NC: Crowdsourced bike routes based on real-time GPS/rider feedback in order to influence public policy, aid users with optimal results, and promote biking as transportation.
  • Stone Soup: A platform to help those who need food, or those with food to donate, find food pantries in their area. Individuals in need can also register to get alerts when food is available. Food pantries can also register so they can keep their information up to date.

The teams now have 30 days in an accelerator with mentors provided by the Blackstone Entrepreneurs Network.

NC Datapalooza Final Event

The final NC Datapalooza event will be on Friday, September 12th, from 9-11 A.M.  (EDT) at the Red Hat Tower in Raleigh, NC. The teams will present to a panel of judges to see which team will win the NC Datapalooza competition. Register soon for the final event as the Early bird rates end on August 31st.

Triangle Startup Weekend: Health – August 8th-10th in Durham, NC. All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Cryptolina – August 15-16, 2014 in Raleigh, NC. “The defining Bitcoin event for the Carolinas.” Cryptolina is the Carolinas first event bringing together Bitcoin entrepreneurs, financial professionals, venture capital and angel investors, enthusiasts and others who are looking to network, learn and discuss the emerging cryptocurrency industry.

BSIDES – October 17, 2014 in Raleigh, NC. Security B-sides (BSides) is a community-driven framework for building events for and by information security community members. The goal is to expand the spectrum of conversation beyond the traditional confines of space and time. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. It is where conversations for the next-big-thing are happening.

CoWorking Conference Comes to Durham

Durham, NC – Robert Petrusz, Founder and Manager of Bull City CoWorking attended the 4th annual Global Coworking Unconference Conference (GCUC) in Kansas City at the beginning of May. Robert met lots of great contacts in the coworking field and discussed many topics vital to the coworking movement.

SONY DSCOne thing Robert wanted to do is to bring a coworking event to the South East US so that the coworking operators and people interested in coworking who could not attend the GCUC would be able to benefit from the learning and networking afforded by this conference.
