Cary, NC – You have seen the notices for Startup Weekends and you may have participated in one or more of the events. Last year there were 3 Startup Weekends in the Triangle area and a few others around the state in Asheville and at Elon College. Mital Patel has been heard to say that the Triangle area could support more Startup Weekends, maybe up to 9, and the local organizing committee is looking to support maybe 6 this year. This got me to thinking about how many Startup Weekends there have been.
I did a quick study of the Startup Weekend Website and came up with 5 Startup Weekends that are scheduled in the general area, within driving distance:
- Jan 17-19: Fredericksburg Startup Weekend – (Registration site)
- Jan 24-26: Charlotte Startup Weekend – (Registration site)
Feb 14-17: Triangle Startup Weekend[Jan 13 Revision – Event is being rescheduled]
- Feb 28-Mar 2: Charlottesville Startup Weekend – (Registration site)
- Apr 18-20: Charleston Startup Weekend – (Registration site)
What is a Startup Weekend?
Startup Weekends are 54-hour events where developers, designers, marketers, product managers and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, build products and launch startups!
Startup Weekends are Global
Startup Weekends are a global activity. The Startup Weekend Website shows that there have been 1,068 completed events in 478 cities in over 110 countries with 8,190 startups created. An amazing fact is that “Over 36% of Startup Weekend startups are still going strong after 3 months”, now that is impressive. All the more impressive when you think that The Startup weekend organization only started in 2009.
